Nalanda, The Buddhist University, an ancient seat of learning was probably founded in the 5th century AD. It had, at its height, 2000 teachers and 10,000 students. Students attended university for free, since it ran on the revenues and food donations given by the local villagers. Teachings of the university included the study of the Buddhist scriptures of the Mahayana and Theravada schools, the Vedas, philosophy, mathematics, logic, theology, and medicine. Some of its prominent students included Xuanzang (also spelled Hsuan Tsang) - the Chinese chronicler and Faxian (Fa-hsien). Great Buddhist university at Nalanda was famous far beyond India's borders. The university was destroyed in the 12th Century by Turk invaders. All those who attended Nalanda University were fortunate customers of the university to have such a great education.
